ExpandSpring 2016

IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR 2015 – 2016

***INTERNATIONAL STUDENT MEDICAL HEALTH INSURANCE INFORMATION FOR FALL 2016 SEMESTER WILL BE UPDATED IN MID JULY, 2016***

*PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THE UNITED STATES HEALTH CARE SYSTEM INVOLVES PAYMENT OF PREMIUMS FOR INSURANCE COVERAGE IN ADDITION TO OUT OF POCKET EXPENSES PER DOCTOR'S VISIT, ACCIDENT AND/OR INJURY. THE UNITED STATES DOES NOT HAVE A SOCIALIZED HEALTH CARE SYSTEM AND HEALTH CARE AND INSURANCE COVERAGE IN THE UNITED STATES CAN BE EXPENSIVE. FOR THOSE OF YOU WITH F-2 DEPENDENTS AND FAMILY AND FRIENDS COMING TO THE UNITED STATES, WE HIGHLY RECOMMEND THEY ENROLL IN MEDICAL HEALTH INSURANCE COVERAGE (INCLUDING REPATRIATION AND MEDICAL EVACUATION COVERAGE) FOR THEIR DURATION OF STAY IN THE UNITED STATES.

*The LSU Medical Health Insurance Plan is AIG Educational Markets. Please click on this link to review the website: AIG Educational Markets

NEW INCOMING STUDENTS FOR SPRING, 2016

Please be aware that your Spring 2016 LSU Student Medical Health Insurance coverage will not begin until January 6, 2016. If you plan on arriving in the United States prior to January 6, 2016, you should purchase a private medical health insurance policy to cover you until January 5, 2016. If you choose not to purchase a private medical health insurance policy to cover you from your arrival date to January 6, 2016, you will NOT have medical health insurance coverage. This means you will be required to pay for all medical expenses prior to January 6, 2016.

SPRING 2016 SEMESTER

It is mandatory that all non-immigrant international students who hold F and J visa statuses have health insurance which is acceptable to the University.
  • This includes part-time and full-time registration. Under LSU Student Accident & Sickness Insurance Plan (SASIP), new incoming students with F visa status and J visa status will be automatically charged $1054.00 for the plan which includes repatriation/medical evacuation. Please note that the 2015-2016 insurance premiums have changed. This charge provides students with medical health insurance coverage from January 6, 2016 through August 13, 2016.
  • PLEASE NOTE: Do not select the insurance plan through MyLSU or AIG Educational Markets online website if you hold F or J visa status since this will cause errors in your fee bill and insurance problems.
  • The following students should contact AIG Educational Markets (LSU's insurance company) directly at 1-888-622-6001 or visit AIG Educational Markets to purchase or continue their LSU health insurance coverage since they are NOT automatically charged for LSU's student medical health insurance plan:

  • (a) Non-immigrant international students with visa status other than F and J.
    (b) Students who are registered as Degree Only (DO) for Spring 2016.
(c)Students on Optical Practical Training (OPT: F-1) or Academic Training who are not enrolled for credit hours.

    PLEASE REVIEW THE LINKS BELOW:

    • J Students Visa Status Holders (please read)
    • Add Dependents to LSU Student Medical Health Insurance Plan (AIG Educational Markets)
    • Private Medical Health Insurance Option ("Insurance Coverage Evaluation Forms" must be submitted to International Services) I.S. by Friday, February 5, 2016 by the close of business at 4:30 PM) for the Spring 2016 semester regardless of the coverage end date stated on any previously submitted "Insurance Coverage Evaluation Forms".)
*Please realize a credit of the insurance charge is not immediate upon receipt of the waiver form. This form must be processed. International Services is responsible for contacting the private insurance carrier to verify benefit coverage.
Due to the large volume of waiver request received, the LSU student medical health insurance charge will be delayed:
      1. Students may visit with LSU Bursar Operations (Thomas Boyd Hall) to inform them they have an insurance waiver pending in order to request the LSU student health insurance charge to be deferred so registration can be completed.
      2. Each received waiver form requires an IS staff member to reach the private insurance provider directly to verify benefits (must allow for processing time.)
      3. Students whose waivers must be denied will be contacted directly by e-mail and in the case where additional information may be necessary.
      4. If students have not heard from IS regarding the denial of the waiver or any additional information needed, waiver request is pending and still under review.
      5. Students may check their LSU fee bill to determine if the waiver has been approved and the LSU student health insurance charge has been credited.
Due to a student population of 1600 + and the ability to contact external private insurance providers, processing time may take a number of business weeks.

Please Review Important Insurance Matters Below:

    • The United States does not have a socialized health care system and health care and insurance coverage in the United States can be expensive. Be aware that the United States health care system involves payment of premiums for insurance coverage in addition to out of pocket expenses per doctor's visit, accident and/or injury.
    • AIG Educational Markets will mail out permanent insurance cards to new incoming students this Spring 2016 semester using their Baton Rouge home address listed on their MyLSU account (please keep address updated in your MyLSU account.) A TEMPORARY insurance card may be downloaded from this link: AIG Educational Markets and select “Temporary ID Card” from ID card drop down menu found under “ID Card & Forms”.
    • Again, all F and J visa holders who want LSU's Student Accident and Sickness Insurance Plan should not select the plan via PAWS or on line. THIS WILL CAUSE ERRORS ON YOUR FEE BILL and problems with your insurance. You will be automatically billed for insurance on your fee bill each and every semester you are enrolled in courses at LSU. Any upgrades for NEW INCOMING students and additions for dependents must be done through International Services (Insurance Request Form).
    • The deadline to submit insurance forms each semester is posted on our website, in the LSU fall, spring, and summer registration booklets, and sent out to all F and J visa holders by e-mail at the beginning of each and every semester.
    • All questions concerning benefits, claims, or billing problems of the assessed insurance should be directed to AIG Educational Market’s customer service insurance line at: 1-888-622-6001 or visit AIG Educational Markets. International students needing additional information may contact Janice Goodloe at: 225-578-3191 or e-mail: jgoodlo@lsu.edu You may also meet with Ms. Goodloe during LSU health insurance walk-in hours from 2pm to 4pm every Wednesday afternoon in International Services, 101 Hatcher Hall.
    • If you have LSU’s medical health insurance, you are always required to first report to LSU’s Student Health Center to see a doctor (except in the case of a medical emergency), or your claims will not be paid. To avoid problems or delays, regardless of your insurance policy, always carry your insurance card as you would your drivers’ license.
