Finances

In order to process a Certificate of Eligibility (I-20/DS-2019) for an admitted international applicant, LSU’s International Services is required by U.S. Immigration to verify that the applicant has sufficient funds to cover all of the estimated expenses for at least one academic year.

You can submit your Affidavit of Support and proof of funding with your application materials or you can wait to submit your financial documents after an academic admission decision has been made by LSU admissions staff.

Note: Your admissions application will be processed by LSU admissions staff even if your financial documents are not included with your application materials.

ExpandEstimated Expenses

The amounts listed below are the average estimated costs to attend LSU and are the amounts that all F-1/J-1 prospective students will need to provide to International Services to qualify for a Certificate of Eligibility (I-20/DS-2019) from Louisiana State University. These amounts also are listed on the Certificate of Eligibility and are for full-time enrollment for one academic year (9 months).

Note: Tuition, fees and insurance are subject to change without notice. You can review the LSU Office of Budget and Planning’s fee schedules for the cost of each credit hour.

If your husband, wife and/or children will join you as your F-2/J-2 dependent(s), you must provide proof of financial resources for their support: $4,500 for spouse and/or each child per year in addition to the amount needed for yourself.

Please be aware that the majority of international students are considered non-Louisiana residents for tuition/fee purposes, and International Services does not make decisions regarding residency for tuition purposes. The offices that determine Louisiana residency for tuition purposes based on the LSU Systems’ permanent memoranda are the Graduate School (for graduate-level students) and the residency staff at Undergraduate Admissions (for undergraduate-level students). You should contact one of those offices if you have questions regarding Louisiana residency for tuition purposes.

ExpandFinancial Assistance

All applications for graduate-level financial assistance (such as assistantships) begin with an LSU academic department. You can find more specific information on the LSU Graduate School’s website by clicking on “Financial Assistance.”

LSU scholarships for undergraduate applicants are academically competitive, restrictive and extremely limited in number and value. LSU Financial Aid and Scholarships is in charge of the selection of scholarships for undergraduate applicants, and you can e-mail scholarships@lsu.edu with any questions about LSU scholarships.

Please be aware that LSU does not offer need-based scholarships to international applicants. Also, international students typically do not qualify for U.S. financial aid such as Pell Grants, Stafford Loans, etc.

Note: International Services does not make any decisions regarding which students are awarded any type of financial assistance.

If there is no LSU financial assistance available for you, you can search online for scholarships for international study. There may be private agencies or other entities (government, corporations, etc.) in your home country that offer scholarships or loan programs for the purpose of studying abroad.

ExpandOther financial-aid resources

Note: There are many additional sites for scholarships, but you will need to search for those and research them on your own. Be cautious and investigate the legitimacy of the site/agency, especially if there are fees/costs involved.

DISCLAIMER: Financial-aid assistance that you may receive from any of the sites above and agreements that you make with these entities are your responsibility. International Services and LSU are not responsible for or involved in any decisions that you make regarding your relationship with any of these entities. International Services and LSU also are not responsible for the terms and agreements that you make with these or any other entities.

Full-time enrollment is required for F-1 and J-1 students during fall and spring semesters:

  • Undergraduate: 12+ hours
  • Graduate: 9+ hours
  • MBA: 13+ hours

Note: Full-time enrollment for summer (6 credit hours) is required only if you are admitted for the summer semester. Otherwise, summer enrollment is optional.
